Bus Cancellation and Bus Driver Shortage Information

Please be advised that Kenora Bus KN20 will be cancelled on Tuesday, September 21st.

Thank you for your patience as we work to address the ongoing school bus driver shortage in our area.  Our staff, bus operators, and bus drivers are doing everything possible to get students to school safely, on time, and ready to learn daily.  Please know that school bus cancellations are always a last resort as we understand the impact that they have on families.

The school bus driver shortage has been ongoing for several years in Ontario, as well as throughout Canada and the United States. In past years, the effects of the driver shortage in Northwestern Ontario have been minimized by active recruitment by school bus operators, and a focus on driver retention. This fall we are experiencing acute driver shortages due to unforeseeable personal circumstances affecting drivers, as well as challenges with recruitment, training, and licensing related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Consortium considers all possible options to avoid cancelling bus routes when it can be done safely, including doubling routes and altering bus schedules. In cases where short-term cancellations are unavoidable, we do our best to notify families as early as possible.  We appreciate the understanding shown by stakeholders and families when these cancellations and delays occur.

If you or anyone you know are interested in becoming a school bus driver, please contact us today for more information!  Bus operators offer paid training and licensing for qualified applicants, competitive wages, and signing bonuses. Positions are available for full-time or part-time drivers, with summers and school holidays off.  Drivers are needed in Kenora, Sioux Narrows, Sioux Lookout, Red Lake, Ear Falls, and Dryden.
