The Northwestern Ontario Student Services Consortium in conjunction with our member school boards, and local school bus operators provide a First Rider Program for all new JK/SK bus riders annually. The First Rider Program is designed for parents and children new to school bus transportation. We strongly encourage all children entering the school system for the first time to attend. The sessions include a Buzzy Bee bus safety video and a bus ride, which will allow them to practice the safety procedures they have learned, such as the loading and unloading of the bus safely.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic we are not able to present this program in-person in 2021-2022, but the resources available on this page will help families prepare students for their first bus ride. Please take the time to watch the videos below with your children, and review the documents listed on this page (right hand side) to prepare for a safe and enjoyable school bus ride.

School bus travel is extremely safe. In Ontario, over 800,000 students are transported daily in school buses that travel 1.9 million kilometres every school day. Although injuries to school bus passengers are rare, they most often happen outside the bus as students are boarding and leaving the bus or crossing the street.
